6th of May – Not Just a Walk

From Los Arcos to Viana

It’s 8 a.m., and already there are dozens of pilgrims on the road.

It’s a bright sunny morning and as I climb the gradual hill out of Los Arcos, the low angle of the sun casts my shadow ahead of me, almost pointing in the direction that I’m made to travel.

Departing Los Arcos

I look at the now familiar faces around me, and realize now, as if I haven’t before, that no way on Earth is this just a walk.

My companions on this journey, are indeed true pilgrims.

From all parts of the world, from all walks of life, all ages, and all levels of fitness. The look on their face, says it all, they have just one purpose.

They’re walking towards their goal, whatever that might be for them.

Their own determination and the support of this mobile community will no doubt get them there. ..

Getting there slowly… I tend to just look a day or two ahead in terms of stopping points and terrain.

I think about 22 kms a day is my limit currently.

    Navarette tomorrow night.

I put an extra liter of water in my bag today and my heels complained so much I drank it!

Really enjoying this blog Rob and you’re making good progress. I follow each day on the map and see that you’re heading towards Navarette, Najera & Sto. Domingo. The area beyond that, towards Burgos, I know well and its beautiful countryside.

No not currently walking, but hopefully sometime in the future I will be, just trying to save enough money for it. Trying to work out how much I’ll need and all that. Can’t wait, been wanting to walk it for a few years now. But I’m really enjoying your progress.

I’ll see how accurate my budget was at the end Michael. Happy to post it here.

Though I’m not traveling on a lightweight budget, staying in Albergues and all that good stuff.

Not going mad either. Probably 35 – 40 euro a night for a private room. Some cheaper.

            Do it twice 🙂

I think everyone gets something different from their Camino anyway.

And at different ages, maybe we get different things.

Older Pilgrims tend to walk slower and perhaps ‘smell the roses’ more?

But I’ve had some very ‘wise’ conversations with some younger Pilgrims and some very ‘Shallow’ ones with older Pilgrims.

So I’m not sure age has much to do with anything.

Walking with an open mind and not rushing are the essentials I think.
