How far should you walk on the Camino de Santiago? And why does it matter?

Most Pilgrims seem to walk the minimum 100 kms required to receive the Compostela. 32% from Sarria, 8% from Tui for example (plus other routes).

But is walking a longer Camino of any benefit?
