So answering what seems like a simple question “How much does it cost to walk the Camino” is really tough.\u00a0 But in this blog post I’ll give you three examples of daily costs per person.\u00a0 Higher \u20ac81, Mid \u20ac65 and Lower \u20ac43 Budgets.\u00a0 \u00a0Of course you can go higher and lower as it suits you.<\/p>\n

Camino Cost Survey<\/h2>\n

A recent Camino cost survey asked respondents how much on average they spent per day per person whilst on Camino.<\/p>\n
Not including costs of getting there, gear or anything else.\u00a0 This is just the “on Camino” costs.<\/p>\n
The numbers on the bars are the number of respondents.<\/p>\n
The survey results are fairly close to my budget figures below.<\/p>\n

Daily Camino Budget<\/h3>\n

When talking about Camino costs or budgets, people generally talk about a daily cost.\u00a0 \u00a0This is the easiest way to compare budgets as it will vary a lot depending on how far you are walking and hence the number of days you’ll spend on Camino.\u00a0 So if you walked for 35 days, your daily costs could range from maybe \u20ac50-\u20ac150+ per day (for two people) depending on your style of Camino, which equates to a budget of \u20ac1,750 – \u20ac5,250.\u00a0 \u00a0Do daily cost per person is a good way to compare costs and do your budget.<\/p>\n

My Camino Budget Planner<\/h2>\n

Yes I’m an over planner!\u00a0 But if I’m going to give you an idea of the Costs of a Camino, we need to get into the detail.<\/p>\n
Here’s how I prepare my Camino Budgets. It gives you an idea of what you might want to include and some example “pricing”. Those that have walked recently can by all means chip in with what they think the pricing should be<\/u> for any given route.<\/p>\n
This first table gives you an idea of the cost of certain “items”.\u00a0 All costs are in Euros.\u00a0 (I have an Australian $ AUD just for my own savings targets)<\/p>\n
At the top I’ve added the Camino route, how many people are walking (can be 1 or 2) how many days I’ll be in Spain and how many days I’ll be walking on Camino.<\/p>\n
Then there is a table of “unit costs”.\u00a0 \u00a0These are all per person or per room in the case of a Hotel or Hostal (a private room)<\/p>\n

You would not incur all these costs every day.\u00a0 It’s purely to show the cost of common options. A typical Pilgrim Menu of 3 courses might cost \u20ac12 whereas the Menu del Dia, which is a better quality 3 course meal serviced at lunch time might be \u20ac15 per person.<\/p>\n
A night in a City Hotel room might cost \u20ac90 per room, in a Hostal \u20ac40 per room or an Albergue bunk bed \u20ac12 per bed.\u00a0 Get the idea?<\/p>\n
Then for meals I have a few options, from more expensive to cheaper, these are:<\/p>\n
- \n
- a la Carte Dinner.<\/li>\n
- Menu del Dia.\u00a0 I eat these at lunch time and just have a snack dinner later.<\/li>\n
- Pilgrim Menu (like the Menu del Dia it’s a 3 course meal)<\/li>\n
- Then I have a DIY dinner or tapas.<\/li>\n
- And finally a DIY lunch or dinner than you buy ready prepared or cook yourself in an Albergue kitchen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
So just using this table you could work out your Camino costs based on your preferences.\u00a0 \u00a0For example, one person and 40 nights in Albergues (40 x 12 = \u20ac480) preparing my own lunches and dinners (5 x 2 x 50 = \u20ac400) buying a simple cafe breakfast each day (40 x 6 = \u20ac240) gives me a total cost of my Camino of \u20ac1,120 or \u20ac28 per day.<\/p>\n
Next I have provided some examples of total budgets based on different preferences.<\/p>\n

This allows 4 Hotel nights.<\/p>\n
15% of remaining nights in Albergues. With the remaining 75% in a private room in a Hostal.<\/p>\n
Then with food, 33% is a Menu del Dia Lunch and a Tapas dinner.\u00a0 33& a Pilgriim Menu lunch and Tapas Dinner and 33% a DIY Lunch (market bought food) with a Tapas Dinner.<\/p>\n
The total costs are shown, broken down into accommodation and food, as well as a cost per day.\u00a0 I work out all costs in Euros, with a conversion to my own currency for savings targets.<\/p>\n
Now that you get the idea, I’ll shaw some variations.<\/p>\n

Note that where private rooms are used, the cost is for the room not per person.\u00a0 Worth remembering if there are two of you, as a cheap private room can be almost as cheap as two Albergue beds.<\/p>\n
