{"id":4335,"date":"2024-08-26T13:52:05","date_gmt":"2024-08-26T03:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/general\/?p=4335"},"modified":"2024-08-26T13:53:43","modified_gmt":"2024-08-26T03:53:43","slug":"pack-weight-on-the-camino-de-santiago","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/general\/pack-weight-on-the-camino-de-santiago\/","title":{"rendered":"Pack Weight on the Camino de Santiago"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>How Much Should my Camino Pack Weigh?<\/h2>\n<p>Pack weight for the Camino must be one of the most often discussed topics and frequently asked question!<\/p>\n<p>You will hear all kinds of advice and &#8216;rules&#8217;, such as the 10% of bodyweight rule.\u00a0 \u00a0But what is a realistic pack weight?\u00a0 \u00a0The 10% rule is OK as a very rough guide.\u00a0 But to be honest, your pack should be as light as possible.\u00a0 \u00a0I have walked with a 10kg pack, and 8kg pack and a 6kg pack.\u00a0 \u00a0I can assure you that the 6 kg was the best!<\/p>\n<p>There is another &#8216;rule&#8217; that I read about recently, that kind of made sense.\u00a0 And it was this.\u00a0 Take your bodyweight in Kgs, divide it by two, and that should be the capacity in litres of your pack.\u00a0 That&#8217;s fairly\u00a0 close for my wife and I.<\/p>\n<h2>It&#8217;s Your Pack and Your Camino<\/h2>\n<p>Ultimately it&#8217;s up to you of course.\u00a0 We all have different needs.\u00a0 Some people might carry a CPAP machine or lots of meds for example.<\/p>\n<p>But here are a few tips to get your pack weight down, that you might want to consider:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Lay all your gear out<\/strong>, and ask yourself if you really need each item.\u00a0 Many &#8216;just in case&#8217; items might never get used, or alternatively can be bought locally if required.<\/li>\n<li>Try to take items that have <strong>more than one purpose<\/strong>.\u00a0 \u00a0My rain jacket and pants for example, keep the rain off.\u00a0 They also provide a wind proof layer. They also provide an extra layer to keep warm. The jacket I use to wear in the evening for extra warmth.\u00a0 The jacket and pants are sometimes worn if I go to a &#8216;laundry&#8217; allowing me to wash and dry everything else!<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t take <strong>too many clothes<\/strong>.\u00a0 You really don&#8217;t need anything except walking clothes.\u00a0 We wear them to and from the Camino, as well as on the Camino.<\/li>\n<li>You only need t<strong>wo sets of clothes<\/strong>!\u00a0 The set you are wearing, that you will wash at the end of the day.\u00a0 And a spare set to put on in the evening, that you will wear for walking the next day.<\/li>\n<li>Go for <strong>lightweight options<\/strong> if you can.\u00a0 Sadly. lightweight options often cost more.\u00a0 But you can look for special deals and even used items.\u00a0 A lightweight sleeping bag for example might only weigh 400 gms,\u00a0 My wife&#8217;s is 350 gms.<\/li>\n<li>Only <strong>carry small amounts<\/strong> of things that you can buy locally.\u00a0 For example I carry very small amounts of toothpaste, vaseline for my feet, deodorant, soap, etc etc.\u00a0 \u00a0Most of these types of things I carry in small nalgene screw top bottles.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Towels and similar items<\/strong> can be quite large, bulky and heavy.\u00a0 Look at lightweight versions.\u00a0 My wife for example carried a tiny camping towel that is 80&#215;40 cms.\u00a0 \u00a0She would love a larger one but doesn&#8217;t want to carry it!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Maybe you have some questions about packing light?\u00a0 Feel free to ask in the comments below.<\/p>\n<p>Or share your own packing light tips?<\/p>\n<h3>Camino Packing List<\/h3>\n<p>Oh.\u00a0 Weigh everything!\u00a0 \u00a0I keep a spreadsheet with all the weights of my gear and I go through it many times looking for where I can reduce weight.\u00a0 You can <a href=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2018\/packing-list\/\">download the packing list here,<\/a> and use to enter your own gear.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How Much Should my Camino Pack Weigh?
