{"id":1911,"date":"2015-09-18T10:37:44","date_gmt":"2015-09-18T00:37:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/robscamino.com\/?p=1911"},"modified":"2025-03-26T18:14:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-26T07:14:12","slug":"how-long-should-you-walk-for-your-camino","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/how-long-should-you-walk-for-your-camino\/","title":{"rendered":"How long should you walk for your Camino?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><strong>OK, OK.\u00a0 Everyone told me this would happen!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Having said that walking one Camino was enough for me&#8230;&#8230;..I&#8217;m now planning the next.<\/p>\n<p>This next one will be a &#8216;short&#8217; walk of 100 kms from Sarria as my wife Pat wants to join me but she&#8217;s not physically capable of a longer one.\u00a0\u00a0 Maybe we&#8217;ll share our journey on this blog too.<\/p>\n<p>So, will a 100 km walk be enough?\u00a0 Enough to experience the Camino in all its glory?<\/p>\n<p>Honestly I think not.\u00a0 But it will be a nice taster.\u00a0 And who knows, we may try a longer Camino together in the future.<\/p>\n<p><strong>So how long is long enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">just my view<\/span> of course, but I think 14-20 days is the minimum required for those who want to truly &#8216;experience&#8217; the Camino.\u00a0 And note that I talk about days, not kilometres.<\/p>\n<p>For me it&#8217;s about time on the road, not distance.\u00a0 It&#8217;s the number of hours you walk, not how fast you walk.<\/p>\n<p>The reason I say that, is for me at least, walking the Camino is a bit like meditation.\u00a0 It&#8217;s a time to reflect, to explore emotions, maybe spirituality.\u00a0 To think about what&#8217;s important in your life.\u00a0 And to refresh a bit.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard to think about work and your &#8216;normal&#8217; day to day like whilst walking the Camino.\u00a0 Why?<\/p>\n<p>Because you&#8217;ll be focussing on:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Your physical well being.<\/li>\n<li>Your emotional state.<\/li>\n<li>The wonderful views.<\/li>\n<li>The sensational villages and towns.<\/li>\n<li>And of course the people you will meet along the way.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>And to really reap the benefits of all of this, I think you need to walk for quite a while.\u00a0 Not just a week or ten days.<\/p>\n<p>Experienced Pilgrims had explained the process to me before I departed.\u00a0 And for me it happened just as they predicted.\u00a0 And it could not have happened, in less that 2 weeks.<\/p>\n<p>You see it unfolded like this, in phases:<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Phase 1 &#8211; The Physical<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 This might take a week.\u00a0 You will be focussed on keeping\u00a0your body going.\u00a0 Making sure your fee are OK.\u00a0 Testing and adjusting your gear.\u00a0 Getting &#8216;comfortable&#8217; with the whole process of walking for hours each day.\u00a0 And you&#8217;ll be tested physically.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Phase 2 &#8211; The Emotional<\/strong><\/em>.\u00a0 This can be a bit of a Roller Coaster ride.\u00a0 Whilst you might be coping a little better with the physical challenge, emotional challenges can start to appear.\u00a0 You might be questioning why you are walking.\u00a0 Or maybe you worry about those you have left behind.\u00a0 Perhaps you are starting to question if you can really make it&#8230;..<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Phase 3 &#8211; The Spiritual<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Right on time, this happened for me at the end of week 2.\u00a0 I was comfortable, as comfortable as one can be, with the physical and emotional challenges.\u00a0 And as I relaxed more and just enjoyed the journey for what it was&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;..magic started to occur.<\/p>\n<p>I mention in this blog and on <a href=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/camino-de-santiago-video-series\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the videos<\/a>, that by the end of week three I think it was, I felt I had achieved what I set out to do.\u00a0 You see, by that time, I had gone through those three phases.<\/p>\n<p>And this raises the question in my mind.\u00a0\u00a0 For how long should one walk, to experience all that the Camino has to give us.\u00a0\u00a0 Can those three phases really be experienced in a short period?<\/p>\n<p><em>I don&#8217;t think so.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So if you are planning your first Camino, and you have limited time, I&#8217;d suggest you try to spend 3 weeks on the road if you can.\u00a0 But at least 2.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>OK, OK.
