{"id":1348,"date":"2015-06-27T01:49:22","date_gmt":"2015-06-27T01:49:22","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/robscamino.com\/?p=1348"},"modified":"2025-03-19T16:11:51","modified_gmt":"2025-03-19T05:11:51","slug":"27th-of-june-camino-budget","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/27th-of-june-camino-budget\/","title":{"rendered":"Camino Budget"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1>How to\u00a0Prepare a Camino Budget<\/h1>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One question that many people ask whilst planning their Camino revolves around budgets.\u00a0 How much do things cost and how much money do I need to take.<\/p>\n<p>So I thought that I would share my budget as well as a few financial related tips.\u00a0 So here is my budget for the Camino Frances during May\/June 2015.<\/p>\n<p>OK, first a disclaimer!<\/p>\n<p>You can probably walk your Camino on a budget of 25-30 Euros a day (as at 2015).\u00a0 That will mean staying in shared accommodation, eating cheap meals, picnic lunches, maybe doing some cooking yourself and so on.<\/p>\n<p>My budget is kind of at the other end of the scale.\u00a0 100 euro\/day.\u00a0 But I am sure it will be of interest to potential Pilgrims who are not &#8216;drawn&#8217; to the communal \u00a0style of Camino accommodation and who may prefer greater freedom to eat and do what they like.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I&#8217;ll add another couple of cheaper versions of the budget below.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I won&#8217;t go into why I chose not to stay in Albergues. I&#8217;ve explained that elsewhere. (health and privacy issues)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><em><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">My Camino Budget<\/span><\/strong><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">This budget does not include travel to and from the Camino. \u00a0But does include 3 days spent in Santiago at the end and a day in St Jean at the beginning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Unbudgeted things came up of course. \u00a0And these were still manageable within the overall amount. \u00a0Stuff like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">4 visits to a Physio. \u00a0Amazingly cheap. \u00a0Average 30 euro.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Various medications, bandages, tapes. All very cheap.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">A few taxis to and from a Physio.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Daily luggage transport for my heavy stuff and backup supplies (7e \/ day) \u00a0(Would not normally need this)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">A night in a Parador in Santo Domingo.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div id=\"attachment_1349\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1349\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1349\" src=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget.jpg\" alt=\"My Camino Budget\" width=\"301\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget.jpg 301w, https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget-300x288.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1349\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">My Camino Budget<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><em><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Some Camino Accommodation Notes<\/span><\/em><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">All accommodation was private. \u00a0As in a private room. \u00a0These were generally small Hotels, Cara Rurals or Albergues that also had private rooms.\u00a0 Except for\u00a04 times I had a private bathroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">My &#8216;room rates&#8217; varied a lot. \u00a0Cheapest was about 25e. \u00a0Average probably 35e. At the high end 60e (Hotels in large cities).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I used the <strong><em>Brierley guide<\/em><\/strong> mainly for route planning and information. \u00a0It&#8217;s not that great on non-Albergue accommodation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Miam Miam Dodo, the French guide is great for accommodation and easy to understand even if you don&#8217;t speak French. \u00a0I used that a lot. \u00a0I had both guides on my phone. \u00a0(I just scanned the books)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">And for the larger towns, booking.com was excellent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I started off booking just one day ahead. \u00a0Then as I became more comfortable\/confident physically, would sometimes book 2-3 days ahead. \u00a0For the &#8216;circus&#8217; during the last 100 kms, I booked all accommodation a few days before I got to Sarria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I used a debit card for cash. \u00a0This was &#8216;loaded&#8217; with Euros prior to leaving Australia. \u00a0I then used this to withdraw from ATMs or pay for accommodation where they accepted cards. \u00a0(About 15-20% of cases)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Expect to have to use cash for everything though. \u00a0ATMs abound, but plan that you might not see one for a couple of days sometimes. \u00a0And good advice I got was don&#8217;t use ATMs when the banks are closed! \u00a0Just in case it keeps your card. \u00a0My bank (Commonwealth) actually provides 2 cards with their service, in case one is eaten by an ATM.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">I was well under budget for meals, as I tended to eat the Pilgrim menus which are great value at 9-11e including a half bottle of wine.\u00a0 A few times I tried a la carte menus, but to be honest, the food wasn&#8217;t\u00a0much better than the Pilgrim menus&#8230; \ud83d\ude41<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Breakfast and lunch ended up being a bit cheaper than budgeted too.\u00a0 And water.\u00a0 It&#8217;s only 0.5 &#8211; 1 euro a bottle.\u00a0 I mostly filled my water bladder each morning in the bathroom.\u00a0 Sometimes I bought an extra bottle along the way.<\/p>\n<p>But the savings on my budget were taken up by other unbudgeted things.\u00a0 Like topping up my Spanish SIM card. \u00a0I went through about 200e on the SIM card, but that was mainly uploading videos when the wifi was too slow.<\/p>\n<p>If I went again, in a similar &#8216;style&#8217;, I would probably plan on the same budget, but not spend it all.<\/p>\n<p>But here are a couple more versions of my budget that are &#8216;cut down&#8217;.\u00a0 Just be aware that there is no &#8216;contingency&#8217; in these two budget versions for unforeseen expenses.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>A more Careful &#8216;Private Accommodation&#8217; Camino Budget.\u00a0 (e63\/day)<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This would merely require a bit more care in seeking out cheaper accommodation.\u00a0 Not difficult.\u00a0 Maybe cutting back a bit more on caf\u00e9 snacks, not buying much bottled water etc.\u00a0 Easy to achieve.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1352\" style=\"width: 311px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1352\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1352\" src=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget-careful.jpg\" alt=\"More Careful Camino Budget\" width=\"301\" height=\"313\" srcset=\"https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget-careful.jpg 301w, https:\/\/robscamino.com\/2015\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/06\/Budget-careful-288x300.jpg 288w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 301px) 100vw, 301px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">More Careful Camino Budget<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><strong>An Albergue Based Camino Budget.
